XXXLine

XXXLINE is a design hacking of the vintage Xline chair, originally produced by Magis in the 1980s. The project reflects on the evolution of an object over time and the shifting value we bestow upon it. The original chair is defined by the precise, rational flow of steel rod; its slightly elastic frame serves as the literal skeleton for this intervention. Here, the lightness and precision of chromed metal are intentionally juxtaposed with the rigor and volume of water-resistant MDF. Left in its "raw" state, the material’s intrinsic properties eliminate the need for surface treatments. The juxtaposition of black structures defines the chair's new volumes, fundamentally redefining its proportions and perception. Once an extremely lightweight, cold, and aesthetically mimetic object within the domestic landscape, the Xline is transformed into XXXLINE: a totemic object, rich in personality—a functional sculpture. The project serves as a "twist" on a chair design that has reached museum-grade status due to its influence on contemporary design. The intervention projects the studio’s signature style while emphasizing the aura of the original piece. It renders the once-flat backrest three-dimensional and introduces a perforated seat featuring an X-pattern. Before being hacked, the chair was meticulously restored to preserve its patina; those minor surface imperfections remain as a testament to the passage of time and its vintage soul.

XXXLINE è una hacking della sedia vintage Xline prodotta da Magis negli anni ‘80. Il progetto riflette sull’evoluzione dell’oggetto nel tempo e sul valore mutevole che si conferisce ad esso. La sedia originale è delineata dall’andamento preciso e razionale del tondino metallico, dove la sua struttura leggermente elastica viene utilizzata come scheletro vero e proprio dell’intervento progettuale: volontariamente si accosta la leggerezza e la precisione del metallo cromato al rigore e al volume del MDF idrofugo, con prestazioni intrinseche che non necessitano trattamenti superficiali, una materia cruda. La giustapposizione di strutture nere definisce i nuovi volumi della sedia ridefinendone proporzioni e percezione. Da oggetto estremamente leggero, freddo ed esteticamente mimetico nell’ambiente domestico, la Xline diventa XXXLINE, ovvero un oggetto totemico, ricco di personalità, una scultura funzionale. Il progetto è un twist su un modello di sedia diventato museale vista la sua influenza nel design contemporaneo.Il design è volto a proiettare lo stile dello studio ed enfatizzare l’aura già presente sulla sedia originale, rendendo tridimensionale lo schienale (prima piatto) e la seduta forata con un pattern a X. La sedia, prima di essere hackerata, è stata restaurata preservandone la patina e i piccoli difetti superficiali, che conservano l’aspetto vintage e testimoniano il passare del tempo.
